Weather & Environment UpdateThe Icelandic volcano which disrupted most of Europe's flight activity over the last month is reported by scientists to be 'on pause'. Eyjafjallajökull has been emitting steam instead of ash, good news for the aviation and travel industries who were hit hard by the recent grounding of many flights. It will not be entirely over, however, until the volcano ceases to emit ash for three months, so don't hold your breath. The BBC reported today that the Alaotra Grebe, a type of bird found around Lake Alaotra in Madagascar, has been officialy classed as extinct. It is the first confirmed extinction of a bird since 2008, and has been blamed on a number of factors including the use of 'blanket' fishing techniques, the introduction of other species to the lake and poaching. If you were hoping for a scorching bank holiday weekend then you might be disappointed, as forecasts show cloud cover and heavy rain across many of Britain's National Parks for Saturday and Sunday. We've got our fingers crossed for a scorcher though and it's always worth a look at our family camping website, The Tent Team, if you're after some summer holiday kit. |
